, ohio, right now. our brand new cnn/orc poll shows president obama with a narrow lead in that state 50% to mitt romney's 47%. that's within the sampling error making it still effectively a dead heat. our chief national correspondent john king is joining us right now. he's in ohio as well. john, take us inside these numbers. >> wolf, they are fascinating when you look deep in this poll. the president you just showed he's here in ohio. governor romney will be here tontd. they expect some 35,000 republicans at his rally. in this part of the state i'm in cincinnati tonight. when you look deep in our poll you see this one will be fought out through the last poll closing on election night. look at these two candidates among independents. governor romney with a slight edge 48% to 46%. again, that's a statistical tie well within the margin of error. the auto bailout is one of the things the president thinks will help him here in ohio. you heard him mention that in this speech. look at this in the industrial northern part of the state, across northern ohio where you have many auto-related direc

election day. another battleground state in the state of ohio this is a place where the obama campaign worked very hard in early voting in the african-american community in the cleveland area, right here, cuyahoga county here. i'll draw a big line, cleveland, the cleveland suburbs and to a lesser degree down here to the south in the akron area people without power, put it to the same test, how did they vote in 2008, you see some republicans in the more rural counties but across the top of the state the northern part of the state heavy democratic areas, our producer called out too cuyahoga today early voting down a bit today than it was four years ago so you see some obvious immediate impact. the question is again, with the few more days to go, five more days can they get this fixed come election day. one more quick example in the northern virginia suburbs and again to the naked eye it tells the story. still a lot of people out right on the northern washington d.c. area, right there, fairfax county, arlington, go back four years, you see all that blue, this is the area most critical to

at this point right now, suzanne, the state of the campaign, president obama was supposed to hold a rally this morning in florida. he did not attend. he came back to washington. governor romney is participating in some campaign events as we speak, but this evening he will not be -- will he cancel his events later this evening. there will be no events tomorrow, suzanne, so, yes, eight days before the election, this sandy has thrown a big wrench to the campaign. >> is there any sense from the obama campaign that this really allows the president to do something that mitt romney can't do, which is look presidential to have a real test of his leadership at a time that is critical to the nation? >> well, you know, suzanne, they won't outwardly say that, but, in fact, this is an opportunity for president obama, i think, to be able to step up and show that he is a leader, and i think that's why we saw governor romney take the action and cancel his campaign events as well. governor romney did pretty well in this last presidential debate, which was about foreign policy, but in many ways that debate

's eight days until the presidential election. president obama and mitt romney being forced to change plans as the storm approaches. more on that in just a moment. first, lets ae go right to bill karins for the very latest on this hurricane. bill . >>> good morning to you, willie. new update from the national hurricane center. there was zero good news spread by them. the storm has increased in intensity a little bit. now we're looking at possibly 80 to 90 mile per hour landfall. maybe the storm surge could be a little bit worse. this is not what anyone wanted to hear. the winds are now the up to 85 miles per hour. that's a healthy hurricane. for this time of year it's ridiculous. you don't get these this far north this time of year. it's moving to the north at 15. now only about 350 to 400 miles away from new york city. here's the new forecast path. they shifted it just a little bit south. it was up here in central jersey and now they lowered it a little bit towards wildwood. that's a better forecast for a few spots including philadelphia. it's one of those rare events where the winds will

to the problem. the public's a bit adrift right now and trying to decide, obama has not been a failure as president, he's not been great, he's not been a failure. is he mediocre? a little better than mediocre? is he somewhere near great? people will disagree on that, but nobody's arguing the issue is in play. romney's been a very effective candidate lately, very effective, and he got rid of his opponents, smashed them to nothing. i think he's got a great team around him. i think the president's team is too small, a little bit narrow and isolated to put it lightly. but i tell you, obama does have that amazing luck. and here's a guy that ran for the senate against two or three opponents who all dropped out because of marital problems. he walked into the united states senate, he was a celebrity before he got there. he ran against hillary and had the war issue against her, beat her on the war issue, took on john mccain when he was really beaten down by then. and here he is facing romney who is a very tough opponent. so this is going to be a close election. they're somewhat equally matched.
